Overview & History

The Olympic Council of Malaysia was initially registered as the Federation of Malaya Olympic Council (FMOC) on 13th November 1953, under the Societies Act as a volunteer-based, non-profit and non-government organization.

The FMOC held its first meeting on 24th April 1954, attended by 3 representatives from Hockey and 4 from Athletics. The Malayan Bore Rifle Association sent an observer. The FMOC then invited all National Sport Associations to become members so they could participate in multi-sports events. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) officially recognized the FMOC on 26th May 1954.

With the formation of Malaysia, the FMOC changed its name to the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) at its EGM held on 5th May 1964. In April 1972, its name was translated into Malay Language as “Majlis Olimpik Malaysia” (MOM).

First registered as the Federation of Malaya Olympic Council (FMOC) in 1953, the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) is a non-governmental not-for-profit organisation, of unlimited duration, in the form of an association registered with the Commissioner of Sports’ office in the Ministry of Youth and Sports, under the Sports Development Act 1997 (registration no. K-KUL/10119).

The OCM is recognised by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the International Sport Federations (IFs). The OCM is also affiliated to the following international sport organisations:

  • The Association of National Olympic Committee (ANOC)
  • The Olympic Council of Asia (OCA)
  • The Southeast Asian Games Federation (SEAGF)
  • The Islamic Solidarity Sports Federation (ISSF)

Since 1954, the OCM has been the sole sport organisation in Malaysia with the exclusive right to enter athletes to participate in the Olympic Games, the Asian Games and the SEA Games.

For Commonwealth Games purposes, the OCM is also known as the Commonwealth Games Association of Malaysia (CGAM) and the CGAM is affiliated to the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF).

Members of the OCM are either Affiliates or individual members.

Affiliates consists of National Sports Associations (NSAs) of Malaysia, which are recognised by their respective IFs as the sole governing body of their sport in Malaysia. For a list of Affiliates, click here.
