Publishing Policies

Wiley Research DE&I Statement

As a signatory to the Joint Commitment for Action on Inclusion and Diversity in Publishing, which aims to drive positive change within scholarly publishing, Wiley is committed to implementing sustainable and positive change to advance diversity, equity, and inclusion through the editorial processes and policies of its publications. This includes encouraging diversity, equity, and inclusivity within our editorial teams, reviewers, and authors as appropriate and consistent with local regulations. Our publications do not tolerate harassment or discrimination against an individual on the grounds of age, ancestry, color, religious creed, physical or mental disability, marital status, medical condition, genetic information, military and veteran status, national origin, race, sex, gender, gender identity, gender expression, sexual identity, sexual orientation, political affiliation, or any other category protected by law.

This statement applies to all Wiley-owned publications.

Best Practice Guidelines on Research Integrity and Publishing Ethics

We aim to support all those involved in scholarly publishing with a summary of best practice guidance with respect to editorial policies regarding research integrity and publishing ethics. Our best practice guidelines on research integrity and publishing ethics are written for researchers, in their various roles as editors, authors and peer reviewers; societies; librarians; funders; corporations; publishers; and journalists.

Content Sharing

We support the easy facilitation of research collaboration via sharing of full-text articles across scientific communities. We believe that in accordance with the STM article sharing principles, researchers with legitimate access to Wiley subscription articles may share the articles within private research groups.

Licensing

Some journals ask authors to transfer their copyright to the journal. Others accept an exclusive license from authors. Authors wishing to make their article open access must sign an Open Access Agreement. The societies we partner with decide which copyright arrangement they require from the range of options we provide.

Data

Data sharing

We support the growing movement to make research more open, because this leads to a fairer, more efficient and accountable research landscape, which will ultimately drive a more effective and faster pace of discovery. We are committed to improving openness, transparency, and reproducibility of research. We support a standard level policy of “Expects” data.

Data citation

We endorse the FORCE11 Joint Declaration of Data Citation Principles, a set of guiding principles for data within scholarly literature, another dataset, or any other research object. We recommend the format for data citation proposed in this Joint Declaration, and that data held within institutional, subject-focused, or more general data repositories should be cited. Fundamental to enabling reproducible research is the easy access to and ready discovery of its supporting data, made possible through a robust and universal framework that allows research data to be cited through standard reference lists. This will ensure that data is treated as a first-class research object, easily accessible as part of the scholarly literature, and that researchers are credited for their work.

Author name changes after publication

In cases where authors wish to change their name following publication, we will update and republish the paper and redeliver the updated metadata to indexing services. Our editorial and production teams will use discretion in recognizing that name changes may be of a sensitive and private nature for various reasons including (but not limited to) alignment with gender identity, or as a result of marriage, divorce, or religious conversion. Accordingly, to protect the author's privacy, we will not publish a correction notice to the paper, and we will not notify co-authors of the change. Authors should contact the journal’s Editorial Office with their name change request.

Jurisdictional Neutrality

We recognize that the global research community includes diverse perspectives on many issues, including the legal status of certain countries/regions. We believe the best way to respect those diverse views is for authors and editors to be able to identify their own institutional and country/region affiliations. We achieve this by being neutral on any jurisdictional claims. This means that the geographical designations and institutional affiliations in published materials do not represent Wiley’s opinion about the legal status of any country or region.

Local laws and regulations

We publish material on behalf of partner organizations located in many different countries/regions. While we publish for a diverse global audience, we also respect our partners’ responsibility to comply with their local laws and regulations related to published works.

Open Research

We believe that research needs to be available to the public to drive innovation and invention, and so people can find the information they need to make decisions in their lives. We actively support our research communities and are committed to accelerating Open Research. In action, Wiley leads the way in Open Access, driving the transition through innovative agreements with institutions and funders and offering researchers excellent outlets for their articles in our Gold OA program. We help our researchers find the most appropriate home for their work through our cascade and transfer networks, and deliver pioneering new services to increase transparency, reproducibility and integrity.

Peer Review

We believe that peer review is the foundation for safeguarding the quality and integrity of scientific and scholarly research. We want to do everything we can to support reviewers (also sometimes known as "referees") and to recognize their contribution. This is why we’ve created these guidelines. They’re part of our broader goal to facilitate the review experience for journals – and help safeguard the integrity of the research we publish.

Preprints

We believe journals should allow for the submission of manuscripts that have already been made available on preprint servers. Allowing submission does not, of course, guarantee that a manuscript will be considered for peer review; it simply reflects the belief that availability on a preprint server should not disqualify a manuscript from submission. Journals should establish a policy about preprint servers and declare this in their author guidelines.

Text and Data Mining

We encourage innovative uses of the content we publish and support customers who wish to perform text and data mining (TDM) on Wiley content. We are committed to developing tools and services that will enable subscribers to carry out TDM in the most efficient and effective manner, as well as to providing straightforward access to content for TDM purposes.

Waivers and Discounts

We believe that editorial decisions should never be influenced by the ability to pay and it is Wiley policy that editors of open access journals are not involved in correspondence with authors regarding payment of Article Publication Charges (APCs). Our partnership with Research4Life enables research from authors from low- and middle-income countries to be published open access by providing automatic waivers and discounts on Article Publication Charges (APCs) for authors accepted to publish in our fully open access journals.
