Outbreak Brief 34: COVID-19 Pandemic – 8 September 2020

Outbreak Update:  Since the last brief (1 September 2020), 1,912,846 new confirmed1 coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) cases and 37,044 new deaths have been reported globally. To date, a total of 27,038,930 COVID-19 cases and 881,645 (case fatality rate (CFR): 3.3%) related deaths have been reported from 215 countries and territories. The distribution of cumulative cases (proportion of global cases) from the World Health Organization (WHO) reporting regions (excluding Africa) are as follows: Eastern Mediterranean Region 1,793,315 (7%), European Region 4,508,389 (17%), Region of the Americas 14,117,714 (52%), South-East Asia Region 4,787,009 (18%) and Western Pacific Region 520,750 (2%). As of 9am East African Time (EAT) 8 September 2020, a total of 1,306,157 COVID-19 cases and 31,494 deaths (CFR: 2.4%) have been reported in 55 African countries. This is 5% of all cases reported globally. Since the last brief, 53,605 new COVID-19 cases have been reported, which is a 6% decrease in the number of new cases reported when compared to the 1 September 2020 brief. The proportion of new COVID-19 cases reported by region is as follows: Southern region 53% (16,929 cases; 16 % decrease change from previous week), Northern region 19% (20,678; 24% increase), Eastern region 11% (10,539; 24% decrease), Western region 13% (4,411; 10% decrease), and Central region 4% (1,048; 35% decrease).
