Subject: Somewhat disappointing
Subject: Somewhat disappointing
From a great author who wrote superb books about WW2, I looked forward to reading "The End" in order to better understand the psyche of the German people in those days.
Although this is achieved is some ways, it lacks in other aspects:
1. No attention is given to human psychology, to the inner and subconscious motivations of man (and woman) or to group dynamics. You cannot explain Nazi Germany without digging deep into the soul of the human being.
2. For some reason the author deems it necessary to repeat himself time and again. Every subject is explained several times, almost in the same manner. This is tiresome and should have been avoided. As such, the number of pages could have easily been reduced.
Conclusion: interesting read but by far not the ultimate explanation of what drove Germans to self-destruction - for lack of psychological analysis.
