ABSTRACT

The speech and the rise in racial violence and discrimination faced by the Caribbean immigrants, inspired Cliff, to pen one of his most iconic tracks – “Many Rivers to Cross” – which became almost the “national anthem” for the Windrush generation. The author was very critical of their approach especially as the government continued with deportation flights, whilst maintaining the “hostile environment” policy which is a legacy of Powell’s “Rivers of Blood.” One of the positive consequences of the Windrush scandal in April 2018 was the massive media coverage and public education history lesson on the arrival of the Empire Windrush. It is critical that the Windrush generation and other migration histories should be part of the national curriculum on the same status and footing as the teaching of the Holocaust so that future generations understand and learn the importance of cultural diversity and tolerance.
