Prince Albert of Monaco denies passing the coronavirus to Prince Charles

Prince Albert of Monaco, who tested positive for the coronavirus last week, says he doesn't think he gave the virus to Britain's Prince Charles, who is currently afflicted with the virus

Speaking to RTL French radio Thursday, the 62-year-old son of Prince Rainier III and the former American actress Grace Kelly confirmed he was with Prince Charles at an event for Water Aid on March 10 in London.

“I was at a roundtable for his foundation, but I didn't shake his hand. I was at the other end of the table, way far away,” he said in French. “We nodded hello to one another, so I don’t think I can really be accused of contaminating him."

He continued, "There were a lot of other people around at the congress center, and I know he continued his schedule afterwards for a number of days. He added that the heir to the British throne “had a number of other opportunities to catch it.”

Charles, 71, tested positive for coronavirus after "displaying mild symptoms," Clarence House, his official royal residence, said in a statement Wednesday.

"The Prince of Wales has tested positive for coronavirus," the statement said, noting aside from the mild symptoms he "otherwise remains in good health and has been working from home throughout the last few days as usual."

The Prince of Wales is self-isolating at a royal estate in Scotland. His wife, Camilla, 72, has tested negative for the virus. It was not immediately clear whether Charles' mother, Queen Elizabeth II, or her husband, Prince Philip, have been tested.

The news came a week after the queen relocated to Windsor Castle amid the pandemic.

Britain's 93-year-old monarch canceled a number of events "as a sensible precaution" due to the outbreak but as late as last week she was still holding "audiences" with members of the public.
