eBay Launches in Italy

San Jose, CA, January 15, 2001 — eBay®, the world's largest online trading community has launched eBay Italy, its new Italian web site (www.ebay.it). eBay Italy allows Italian buyers and sellers to trade popular Italian items using Italian Lire. In addition, Italian users will have access to the more than 5 million items listed on eBay in Europe and around the world.

"We’re very happy to bring eBay to Italy, one of the world’s leading Internet markets,” said Meg Whitman, president and CEO, eBay Inc. “The site will allow Italian users to trade locally, regionally or globally along with the rest of eBay’s worldwide community of 18.9 million registered users. No other web site offers Italian traders a proven local service with an international reach.”

Already thousands of Italians are enthusiastic eBay users – some make a living from selling on eBay while others have discovered a fun and convenient place to pursue their collecting passions. eBay Italy will offer many of the same features that have made eBay a success around the world: categories and content built around collectibles and other popular items, chat boards that allow the local community to connect online, and unparalleled customer support.

Last week eBay announced an agreement to acquire the majority of the shares of Internet Auction Co. Ltd., Korea’s leading online trading web site. This transaction, and the launch of eBay Italy, establishes eBay in 9 countries that generate the majority of the world’s e-commerce revenues.
