eBay Launches Service for Singapore

San Jose, October 24, 2001 – eBay Inc., the world's online marketplace, today announced the launch of eBay Singapore ( www.ebay.com.sg ), a localized way for Singaporean individuals and small businesses to trade goods and services. The new site is part of eBay’s strategy to leverage common languages in order to enter new international markets more quickly and efficiently with minimal investment in technology.

All items located in Singapore are conveniently grouped together in a dedicated area in English that makes it easier for Singaporean eBay users to browse, buy, sell and meet online. Singaporeans also get complete access to eBay’s global marketplace of 37.6 million registered users. Although trading online will be done in currencies currently available on eBay, users can finalize payments amongst themselves in the currency of their choice.

With this strategy eBay can better serve users in Singapore’s e-commerce market, and there is greater opportunity for a local community to come together and grow. In addition, eBay will be able to use the site to directly promote its online marketplace to new audiences in that region.

In addition to eBay Singapore, the company has web sites serving the needs of online communities in Japan, Korea, Australia and New Zealand as well as in North America and Europe.
