Asia's southernmost tip THE Cape of Good Hope is famous as the southernmost tip of Africa and many people know this. But how many are aware that Tanjung Piai in Johor is Asian continent’s southern-most tip? The reason why even Malaysians are not aware of this is probably because Tanjung Piai lies in a remote area and it takes a good 1½ hours to get there from Johor Baru.
However, once you get there, the scenery is worth the trip. The place is actually a mangrove swamp and the authorities have built a network of wooden bridges cutting through the thick and unspoilt mangrove forest, right to the very tip of the continent.
Although construction of the esplanade is still ongoing, visitors can have a fun time walking on the wooden bridge over the mangrove while looking at the clearly tagged and labelled plants.
When exhausted from the long walk, one can always stop at the esplanade or the wooden platform extending out to the waters to enjoy the view and feel the gentle sea breeze from the Straits of Johor.
From there, the islands of Singapore and Karimun in Indonesia are clearly visible.
A trip to Tanjung Piai is well worth it for nature watching, and of course for the experience of being at Asia’s southernmost tip.
