Russia, winner of the 2006 Davis Cup

The Davis Cup is an annual lawn tennis championship named after the American Dwight Davis, who created the event in 1900 with the aim of developing international cooperation through tennis. Only two countries were completed that first year in 1900, compared with 133 countries today! The Davis Cup is one of the high points on the international tennis agenda, and is contested by some of the world's greatest players.

Each year, sixteen countries, known as the "World Group", qualify for the finals. The other nations play against each other in qualifying rounds in their geographic regions to go through to the following year's finals (click here to see the structure of the Davis Cup).

Each stage in the championship takes place over three days and consists of four singles matches and a double, played in five sets. The first championship of the 21st century was won by the French team, composed of Sébastien Grosjean, Nicolas Escudé, Fabrice Santoro and Cédric Pioline.
The International Tennis Federation (ITF) owns and operates the century-year old Davis Cup championship.

hspace=BNP Paribas and the ITF officially announced their Davis Cup sponsorship agreement on February 7, 2001
The agreement was signed by Michel Pébereau, Chairman and CEO of BNP Paribas, and Francesco Ricci Bitti, President of the ITF.
"This is a great day for Davis Cup as we formally welcome BNP Paribas to the ITF family," said ITF President Francesco Ricci Bitti. "We are very proud that one of the world's great financial institutions, BNP Paribas, has chosen the ITF's flagship event, Davis Cup, as a fitting complement to its long-term involvement with Roland Garros. We believe that BNP Paribas understands the uniqueness of Davis Cup and, as the guardian of this important competition, the ITF is proud to have the BNP Paribas name linked with Davis Cup as an international sponsor in 2001 but, more importantly, as the title sponsor from 2002 through 2006."

As from 2001, BNP Paribas is an international sponsor of the tournament and is designated as the "Official Bank of the Davis Cup" and "Official Sponsor of the Davis Cup".
BNP Paribas Chairman and CEO Michel Pébereau stated: "We are very proud to be both the main sponsor of the leading international team competition, and of the French Open/Roland Garros, one of the four Grand Slam tournaments. Tennis is truly a universal sport, and BNP Paribas is delighted to strengthen its association with the values of performance and fair-play of this game."

In 2002, BNP Paribas becomes the title sponsor of this prestigious international tennis competition and will be designated as the "Official Sponsor of the Davis Cup". The Davis Cup is the ideal event for developing a high-profile partnership comparable to that which was initiated in 1973 between BNP Paribas and the French Tennis Federation. This prestigious international competition, played in teams in qualifying rounds held throughout the year, is anchored in the values of fair play and attracts massive popular support.
