New York City has been the center of the publishing business both in the US and abroad since the onset of a free and independent press. Many of the world’s largest publishing companies are headquartered in the New York, and Madison Avenue remains the world’s capital for the advertising world.

New York City is also a large and influential market for both the consumption and distribution of radio and television content, with five of the top ten media conglomerates located here. Our rich pool of talent makes New York City the location of choice for film, television and news studios. World-class concert and performance halls and the Broadway theater community provide opportunities for talent and business alike.

WHY NYC?
New York City is the global center of the Media and Entertainment industries. Representing over 7 percent of U.S. households, NYC is the largest media market in the nation. For example, the fifty block area just north of Times Square contains 6.3 million square feet of office space and 25,000 employees devoted to the publishing industry.

FILM & TELEVISION
New York City is the headquarters for:
  • 2 of the Top 5 U.S. cable distributors
  • 6 national broadcast networks
  • 10 local TV stations
  • 78 cable networks, including HBO, Showtime, and MTV
  • 4 major film studio companies, as well as several independent film companies

Other NYC Film and Television statistics include:
  • The total number of days of television and movie production in NYC has more than doubled since 2002
  • 6 prime-time series are produced here
  • 9 pilots were shot here in 2005
  • Steiner Studios, the largest sound stage on the East Coast, was opened in the Brooklyn Navy Yard in 2004, with the help of infrastructure improvements contributed by the City
  • 47 local film festivals are held in NYC each year

ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC have their primary news bureaus and broadcast facilities in the City, including street front studios where the morning shows originate. Hearst, VNU, McGraw Hill, Pearson, Reed Elsevier and Random House all publish from New York City.

Several notable media companies have built new headquarters buildings here as part of their long-term commitment to New York City. These companies include Conde Nast, Time Warner, Hearst and The New York Times. Many large international corporations have established their US headquarters here. They include Sony, Bertelsmann, Holtzbrinck and Hachette Filipacchi.

The one-stop shop for all production needs in New York City, including free permits, free public locations and free police assistance.

The New York City Department of Cultural Affairs
Dedicated to providing funding, technical support, and advocacy on behalf of New York City’s non-profit cultural community.

Institute for Media and Entertainment
A new program focused primarily on training for the business aspects of the media and entertainment industries.

New York Production Alliance (NYPA)
NYPA helps to maintain, increase and expedite film and video production in New York City and State.

Latin Media and Entertainment Commission
