1. KAZAKH LEADER HOLDS TALKS WITH VISITING ISLAMIC SCHOLARS.
Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev met with visiting delegation of Islamic
Scholars from Jordan at Presidential Residence in Astana - the capital, today,
April 30. President Nazarbayev told the guests that in the last 10 years -
period of Kazakhstan's independence, Kazakhstan had managed to revive "fruitful
and traditional ties" with all the Islamic countries of the world. According to
Kazakh leader, Kazakhstan is a member of Islamic conference and has economic and
political relations with leading countries of the Islamic world. President
Nazarbayev was granted diploma of Honorable Member of Islamic Sciences Academy
reportedly.
2. RESULTS OF 'ORDER' OPERATION ANNOUNCED.
Kazakhstan's Ministry of Interior Affairs announced results of special operation
called "Order". The operation has started being implemented a week ago. It was
reported today that in several days of the operation over 270 illegal guns and
arms had been confiscated by policemen from ordinary citizens of the country.
Dozens of illegal immigrants from India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Tajikistan and
Sri-Lanka have been detained by police in frames of the operation. All the
detained illegal immigrants are expected to be deported to their native
countries. Investigations are under way.
3. BUSINESSMEN OF ALMATY BLAME LOCAL FINANCIAL POLICE OF IMPOSING PRESSURE OVER
SMALL AND MEDIUM BUSINESSES.
Businessmen of Almaty City and Almaty Oblast united by Association of Small and
Medium Businesses, held gathering in the former capital today, April 30. They
openly criticized local financial police of creating obstacles for normal
development of their businesses. Trying to get bribes from leaders of small and
medium businesses, financial police breaks Kazakhstan's law on support of small
and medium businesses, said Talghat Akuov - leader of the Association of Small
and Medium Businesses. Mr. Akuov added, that if situation was not improved,
local businessmen would have to turn their activities into shadow economy.
4. "ZHELTOQSAN" MOVEMENT BLAMES LEADER OF KAZAKH COMMUNISTS.
Leaders of "Zheltoqsan" movement, uniting veterans of Kazakh Youth Uprise of
December 1986, held press conference today, where they informed journalists
about their having sent open letters to Kazakh President, Kazakh Cabinet and
Kazakh Justice Ministry. In their letters, leaders of "Zheltoqsan" harshly
criticized Serikbolsyn Abdildin - First Secretary of Kazakhstan's Communist
Party for his recent statement about December 1986 events in Almaty. According
to Serikbolsyn Abdildin, the mass gathering of Kazakh youth in frosty days of
December 1986 had been organized by Dinmukhammed Kunayev - former leader of
Soviet Kazakhstan. Mr. Kunayev's replacement by ethnic Russian from Russian
Federation - Gennady Kolbin caused the uprise which led to bloodshed when
special troops tried to dissolve the gathering by force. According to leaders
of "Zheltoqsan", over 60 thousand young Kazakhs have taken part in the uprise in
different towns and cities of Kazakhstan then.
