Caspar W. Weinberger, who as secretary of defense during the Reagan administration presided over the largest peacetime military buildup in US history, died yesterday at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor. He was 88 and had a home on Mount Desert Island.

According to his son, Caspar W. Weinberger Jr., the cause of death was pneumonia.

"Weinberger was an indefatigable fighter for peace through strength," said former secretary of state Colin Powell, who served as Mr. Weinberger's military aide at the Pentagon for five years. Powell hailed him as "a great American and a dear friend."
