Ford's first sound western, and the first to utilise his beloved landscape of Monument Valley, Stagecoach remains an almost perfect exemplar of the genre - the film Orson Welles allegedly watched 40 times before embarking on Citizen Kane. With its deceptively simple narrative - the perilous journey of a stagecoach through the wilderness, transporting a variety of heroes, hypocrites and fools - Ford created a timeless work of art, combining action with a simple grace seldom equalled. Plus Friz Freleng's 1940 animation Confederate Honey (8min).
