Best Cities For Cycling: BostonA Future Best City: BostonBy Brian Fiske

This isn't the first time that biking in Boston has made headlines. It's just the first time that the news has been positive. A three-time dweller on our "worst cities for cycling" list, Boston began its turnaround last summer, when mayor Thomas Menino started riding a Trek Lime and got hooked. "We're going to do more in our city with bikes," the mayor proclaimed to a Boston Globe reporter postride one day--and then he started making it happen. In September, he hired urban planner and former Olympic cyclist Nicole Freedman to serve as Boston's bike coordinator (the city had eliminated the position in 2003). She quickly set up a summit with local and national experts to get the ball rolling.
Plans are just now being finalized on the first significant development since then: 5-foot-wide bike lanes extending along Commonwealth Avenue from Kenmore Square to the B.U. Bridge. It's a small but important step in the right direction, and unlike in years past it shows follow-through. Now, Boston, what's next? Back to The New Best Cities For Cycling
