A census of population is normally taken every ten years and is carried out by the Census Office, part of the Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA).
The census is undertaken by law and in accordance with an EC directive. It is taken as it provides the essential statistical information about the population and households for all parts of the country used by the Government, business and other professional research/consultancy organisations. The next Census will take place on Sunday 27 March 2011 and more information is available. NISRA also carried out a Census Rehearsal in parts of Northern Ireland on 11 October 2009. This helped us test our systems and processes to ensure the 2011 Census runs smoothly. The 2011 Census The 2009 Census Rehearsal The most recent census of population took place on 29 April 2001. Details of the results of the 2001 Census are available on this website. The 2001 Census
