The second largest city in the United States, Los Angeles may very well be the least understood.  Linked with an elaborate network of freeways, the neighborhoods of the contemporary metropolis sprawl over hundreds of square miles in a coastal hugging desert basin surrounded by mountains and bordered to the West by sun-baked beaches.  It's a complex and intricate urban setting that can seem daunting at first, though the vast landscape is quite comfortably navigated from the seat of a shiny convertible thanks to the idyllic all-season weather that first lured filmmakers here to build Hollywood in the early 20th century.

Today, tourists flock to the city to get a glimpse of the countless homes of the stars sprinkling the Hollywood Hills under the famed 45-foot tall sign.

Putting one's hands in those distinguished prints in front of Grauman's Chinese Theatre has become another inevitable tourist cliché—one that seldom fails to capture the imagination of even the most cynical critic. Back up in the hills, the Griffith Observatory, where the climactic shoot-out in Rebel Without a Cause was filmed, offers some of the best views over the vast city, while the reproductions of sacred art in the Forest Lawn Memorial Park in nearby Glendale is vintage Hollywood at kitsch best.

Though it may serve as a surprise to those who've come to think of L.A. as pure fluff, the city is home to a number of internationally renowned museums, including the hill hugging John Paul Getty Museum, perhaps best known for its illuminated manuscripts. The Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) has more than 150,000 works in its collection, and the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), which has three locations, is generally regarded as one of the most important collections of its kind in the world.  The Page Museum, meanwhile, tells the natural story of the Rancho La Brea Tar Pits in the heart of L.A., one of the largest and most diverse collections of extinct Ice Age plants and animals in the world.

To really appreciate L.A., though, hop back in that convertible and explore the city's many diverse neighborhoods, many of them former towns annexed to the larger city over the decades.  From the sparkling skyline of Downtown L.A. to the cafés and clubs of trendy West Hollywood (WeHo) and edgy Silver Lake, and from swank Beverly Hills to laid-back Venice Beach and sunny Santa Monica, the city's diverse population of almost 10 million people assembles a wide range of exciting cultures, traditions, and cuisines in this sun-soaked city, infusing them with a distinctly Southern Californian flair.
