5-year Development Plan for Polonnaruwa district- President

[August 09, 2015]
President Maithripala Sirisena said he will implement a Five Year Development Plan for the Polonnaruwa district to rectify the injustice happened in carrying out the national development of the country.

Priority will be given to the education, health and agricultural fields, the President said, adding that the government will take further necessary steps to develop the Polonnaruwa district like any other developed district in the country within the next five years.

He made these observations while attending a function held to declare open the two-storied building complex for the Zonal Education Office in Polonnaruwa on August 09.

The aim of the Government is to increase the literacy rate by 100%, he added.

Kandy City will be developed preserving its historical heritage - President

[August 08, 2015]
President Maithripala Sirisena says he would comprehensively develop the historical Kandy City under a proper town plan, preserving its historical heritage.

He added that he would implement the work on that after forthcoming Parliamentary Election, paying the consideration on the ideas and suggestions of all political parties, government officials and business community.

The President made these remarks at the 43rd anniversary celebration of Mahanuwara Sinhala Velenda Peramuna (Kandy Sinhala Entrepreneurs’ Front) today (Aug. 08).

Many areas in country was declined due to some stubborn political decisions taken during the past, without giving consideration to the ideas of scholars and intellectuals, says President Maithripala Sirisena.

Special religious ceremony at Thambala Jumma Mosque to bless President

A special religious ceremony was held yesterday (Aug. 10) at the Thambala Jumma Mosque in Lankapura, Polonnaruwa to bless President Maithripala Sirisena.

The President who arrived in the Mosque was warmly welcomed by Islamic devotees. The Islamic religious leaders, including Mavulavi Naina Marikkar held a special religious prair and blessed the President.

Posts Ministry Secretary removed from his post
[August 08, 2015]
The Secretary of the Ministry of Posts has been removed from his post by President Maithripala Sirisena yesterday (Aug. 07), after considering of a complaint and recommendation for removal by Election Commissioner.

The removed Secretary has been transferred to the Ministry of State Administration. Additional Secretary of the Ministry of State Administration has appointed him as the Acting Secretary there.

President advices voters to elect only suitable people to Parliament
[August 08, 2015]
All voters of the country have a great responsibility to elect only suitable persons to the Parliament in forthcoming General Election, says President Maithripala Sirisena.

Only most suitable candidates who work for the country and safeguard the respect of the Parliament should be elected to the Parliament at the election, he added. People should do that selection according to their knowledge, intelligence and prior experience of the persons, he further stated.

President appoints new two Vice-Chancellors

[August 06, 2015]
President Maithripala Sirisena said the government will create an environment where the business community should be able to operate freely without interference from politicians. He said this in his address to the closing ceremony of the Economic Summit 2015 at the Cinnamon Grand yesterday (August 5). The Summit was organized by the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce.

 

[August 06, 2015]
President Maithripala Sirisena yesterday (Aug. 04) met Mr. Ananda Withana who was critically injured by the suicide bomb attack aimed at the President during his time as the Minister of Agriculture and Agrarian Services in 2008.

The President went to Mr. Withana’s house in Piliyandala last evening to inquire into his health. He inquired about the medical treatment for Mr. Withana and held cordial discussion with his family members and close relations.

Knowledge we should earn for national security is unlimited - President

[August 04, 2015]
President Maithripala Sirisena extended the 5-year term of Ven. Dr Bellanwila Wimalaratana Nayake Thero as Chancellor of the Shrijayawardanepura University for a further period of five years. The President handed over the letter of extension to Ven Wimalaratana Thero at the Bellanvila Rajamaha Viharaya yesterday (August 4).

The President offered pooja at the temple and obtained blessings from the Maha Sangha on this occasion.

President Maithripala Sirisena thanked Turkey for the steps taken to strengthen bilateral relations and cooperation. He said Turkish construction companies have partnered in several construction projects including a housing project in Mannar where 100 houses were built.

He made this comment when the outgoing Turkish Ambassador Iskender Kemal Okyay paid a farewell call on President Sirisena at the President’s official residence today (August 4).

Postal voting begins today

“Professor Nandadasa Kodagoda worked with commitment to promote scientific knowledge among the people,” stated President Maithripala Sirisena delivering the keynote address at the 18th death anniversary commemoration of the late Professor Nandadasa Kodagoda held in Sri Lanka Foundation Institute yesterday (Aug 3).

President Maithripala Sirisena emphasized that he will not allow to discontinue the construction work of the Moragahakanda water project halfway as this project would resolve the agricultural and drinking water problems faced by the farmers in Rajarata, ending their years long sorrowful tale.

The rest of the postal voters will cast their votes on August 5 and 6.

A total of 566,823 voters are eligible to cast postal votes at the forthcoming General Election.

 President Maithripala Sirisena inaugurated a luxury bus service a for the benefit of the pilgrims who come from all over the island to worship the Atamasthana, the eight sacred places of Buddhist worship in Anuradhapura.

After declaring open the renovated Abhayagiriya Stupa and offering the first pooja for the Stupa, the President inaugurated the luxury bus service on July 31.

A New Zealand business delegation keen to invest in Sri Lanka will be visiting the island at the end of November to explore investment opportunities, said the New Zealand Ambassador to Sri Lanka Grahame Morton.

The Special Envoy of the President, Minister D.M. Swaminathan paid his last respects to the late former Indian President Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam at the State Funeral in Rameshwaran, India on 30th July 2015.

At the State Funeral, the Special Envoy conveyed the condolences of President Maithripala Sirisena,

 International community made instance commitments to President Maithripala Sirisena’s request for foreign support to save the Sri Lankan farming community affected by kidney disease.

The President requested the support of all friendly countries of Sri Lanka to control the kidney disease from which about 1,000 people die annually. The President made this observation during a meeting with Ambassadors and representatives of international organizations at the Presidential Secretariat last.
