1. 마이클 잭슨의 히트곡 은 당시 미국 대중음악계에 뿌리 깊은 인종차별의 벽을 허무는 계기가 됐습니다. 마이클 잭슨이 미국 소수인종 출신 가수들에게 어떤 영향을 미쳤는지 취재했습니다.

2. 마이클 잭슨의 음악은 세대와 인종을 초월해 남녀노소에게 사랑을 받았습니다. 그 인기는 잭슨파이브 시절로 거슬러 올라갑니다.



"흑인 사회의 케네디가죠."



제임스 워커 연예계 전문 변호사는, 마이클 잭슨이 백인의 전유물로 여겨졌던 TV 쇼 프로그램에 금기를 깬 인물이라고 말합니다. 인종편향적 성향이 강했던 채널들도 입장을 달리하게 됐습니다.

"흑인 가수들을 주류 TV쇼에 출연시켜 인종에 관계없이 대중에게 표를 팔 수 있다는 걸 보여준 거죠."



3. 하지만 한꺼번에 장벽이 허물어지진 않았습니다. 의 엄청난 인기에도 CBS 레코드 전직 대표, 월터 예트니코프는 마이클 잭슨의 뮤직비디오를 방영하기 위해 MTV를 상대로 싸워야 했습니다.

"당시 과 이 있었는데, MTV가 방영하지 않겠다고 버텼습니다. 록음악 채널이라는 명목으로 과 뮤직비디오를 내보내지 않겠다는 거였죠."



예트니코프는 CBS 음반사 가수들의 뮤직비디오를 전면 회수하겠다고 위협했습니다.



"MTV에서 들은 내용을 언론에 공개하겠다고 협박했죠!"



"어떤 내용 말인가요?"



"흑인 가수라는 이유로 뮤직 비디오를 방송하지 않겠다는 MTV의 입장이 언론에 나가면 후폭풍이 어떨지 생각해 보라고 했습니다."



4. 그렇게 해서, 마이클 잭슨의 뮤직 비디오는 MTV의 인종차별 장벽도 허물게 됐습니다.

"그 이후 나온 흑인 가수들은 마이클 잭슨 덕분에 MTV에 자연스럽게 비디오가 나갈 수 있었습니다. 마이클의 후광 효과를 본 거죠."



할럼 가에 있는 아폴로 극장엔 마이클 잭슨의 팬들이 모여 있습니다. 1969년, 마이클 잭슨이 아마추어 나이트 공연을 한 곳입니다. 거리에선 잭슨의 음악이 울려 퍼지고 있습니다. 사후에도 마이클 잭슨은 남녀노소 막론하고 사람들을 한데 모으는 힘을 다시 한번 보여줬습니다.

1. Billie Jean is one of my favorite. It was also a song that helped dissolve some racial barriers that impacted the music business at the time. Mary Snow explains who Jackson made a huge impact on careers of minority artists in the US.

2. From his work as an adult to songs sung as a child, Michael Jackson is being remembered for transcending generations and color going back to the "Jackson 5".

"They were the Kennedys of the black community."

Their regal status, says entertainment attorney James Walker, came at a time when black artists had difficulty getting on white radio and couldn't play certain venues. He says Michael Jackson changed the landscape.

"He showed that you could take a black artist and his brothers and sisters, put them on mainstream TV, put them in mainstream venues and allow them to sell tickets and reach the masses, black, white or brown."

3. But not all barriers were erased.

As popular as Billie Jean was, the former head of CBS records Walter Yetnikoff says he had to fight with MTV to air Jackson's videos.

"There was 'Beat it' and 'Billie Jean' and Mtv wouldn't play it."
"They wouldn't play it?"
"They would not play 'Beat it' or 'Billie Jean' on the grounds they were a rock station."

Yetnikoff says he threatened to pull videos of his other artists, and he says he told MTV.

"I'm going to go public with what you just told me."
"And that was?"
"That we won't play a black artist and i'm going to public, watch what happens to you."

4. Jackson's videos took off on MTV....and knocked down yet another barrier.

"The black artists that followed him that eventually landed on Mtv rode the coattails of Michael Jackson, it's all Michael."

Here in Harlem, fans have been gathering outside the Apollo Theater where Michael Jackson performed at amateur night back in 1969. People have been singing his songs, dancing in the streets. And as one fan said, perhaps his greatest legacy is that he brought people together.
