TOKYO -- Japanese drugmaker Shionogi aims to seek as early as this month the government's blessing for the use of its coronavirus vaccine, a key step toward the rollout of homegrown shots here.

"We want to submit an application around June or July at the latest," Shionogi President Isao Teshirogi had said in May. The company has begun consultations with relevant authorities on the vaccine candidate, which is currently in the final stage of clinical trials.
