Reinforcing Germany’s environmental protection industry

Federal Environment Agency publishes course book and Internet system on development of foreign markets

The export market share of German environmental protection goods and services holds potential for considerable growth. A new publication by the Federal Environment Agency (UBA) shows how it can be done, what the opportunities and risks are, and which success factors and market strategies are promising. The guide titled Export Umwelttechnik – Ein Kursbuch für deutsche Umweltunternehmen [Exporting environmental technology – a course book for German environmental companies] details step-by-step the way to successful foreign ventures. In addition, the Internet version at http://www.umweltexport.de shows interesting target markets for environmental companies and how to get the most out of the many grant programs that exist.

The performance of the German environmental protection industry enjoys an excellent reputation worldwide. However, the export market share for environmental protection goods and services is considerably lower than the high level of exports in the secondary industry. One can assume that considerable growth potential exists for the small and medium-sized companies which make up environmental protection sector. Environmental protection markets are considered to be growth markets in many parts of the world.

The World Summit on Sustainable Development held in Johannesburg in 2002 reiterated the point that many environmental problems know no borders and that environmental protection is a global task. The heightened environmental consciousness that has gone hand in hand with the globalisation of environmental problems has led to growing demand for environmental technologies and environmental protection services worldwide. These are opportunities for German installations manufacturers and service providers.

Promotion of exports in the environmental sector will help in taking on our responsibility for global environmental protection and will strengthen Germany’s position as a business location.

The federal government is currently increasing its support for small and medium-sized companies that seek to enter foreign markets. The focus of the “Weltweit aktiv” foreign trade offensive is marketing innovative and environmentally friendly technologies. The UBA publications complete these activities.
