German literature

There is an outstanding tradition of German-language literature, from Goethe and Schiller to modern masters such as Brecht and Grass. The success of contemporary German authors in the UK, including Bernhard Schlink, Hans Magnus Enzensberger, Karen Duve, Elke Schmitters and children’s author Cornelia Funke shows that German literature is a very important part of European culture. Each year there are 60,000 new publications in the German book market – that’s 18% of all the books published worldwide per year. That puts Germany in third place among the world’s book producers.
