The Queen's new puppy which was given to her for comfort while Prince Philip was in hospital has died at just five months old, it has been reported.

Fergus, the dorgi, was one of two new dogs adopted by Her Majesty in February after the Duke of Edinburgh was admitted to St Bartholomew's hospital in London.

The 95-year-old monarch, who is still grieving her husband's passing on April 9, aged 99, is said to be "devastated" by her latest reported loss.

It is understood HM walked Fergus and Muick almost every day around the grounds of Windsor Castle to keep herself occupied as she mourned the Duke.

Middle son Prince Andrew had surprised his mum with the dachshund-corgi crossbreed puppies.

A Windsor Castle insider told The Sun : "The puppies were brought in to cheer her up during a very difficult period.

"Everyone concerned is upset as this comes so soon after she lost her husband.

"On top of that there’s been the problems with her grandson, Harry."

On the night before Philip's funeral on April 17, the Queen reportedly took the pups out near Frogmore where Prince Harry had been isolating in the run up to the funeral.

Her Majesty was seen driving a green Jaguar from the castle to Frogmore Gardens - where her mum is buried - alongside the dogs.

Over the years, she has had more than 30 dogs.

An insider told the Telegraph the new puppies were a “welcome distraction” for the monarch, and had taken on even “greater significance” since Philip died.

They added walking the pets was her way of “coping with misfortune and great unhappiness”.

Muick and Fergus are believed to be the first the monarch has owned that aren't direct descendants from a corgi called Susan that she was given for her 18th birthday in 1944.

Buckingham Palace did not want to comment when approached by the Mirror.
