Post 9/11

Los atentados del 11 de septiembre abren la puerta a la sociedad del riesgo. Una sensación de amenaza que es aprovechada para justificar el encumbramiento de la Seguridad en detrimento de libertades y derechos. A este clima político y social no es ajena la ficción, que introduce en sus producciones de una forma más o menos explícita las convulsiones de la actualidad. Este hecho, unido al que las series de televisión norteamericana estén viviendo un momento dulce en su Tercera Edad Dorada, hace que sean un interesante objeto de análisis sobre la propagación de la sensación del miedo. Un reflejo de la realidad que llega incluso a las apuestas más alegóricas como las referentes al mundo postapocalíptico. En este sentido, el análisis se centra en uno de los éxitos más sonados de la televisión por cable: el holocausto zombi narrado en The Walking Dead. Un estudio centrado en cómo la dimensión siniestra construye un entorno ultraviolento sin salida, marcado por un enemigo incierto que lleva al grupo a apostar por la supervivencia. Fruto de ello, la nueva sociedad es representada en base a unos clichés conservadores que justifican el sometimiento de derechos y libertades en torno a una defensa capitaneada por hombres viriles y fuertes. Una metáfora de la supremacía de la Seguridad que estamos viviendo en los últimos años.

La televisión es una de las instituciones socializadoras fundamentales. Sus producciones, impregnadas de elementos contextuales, toman parte activa en la construcción simbólica de la realidad a través de sus informaciones y ficciones. Justamente estas últimas viven hoy en día un momento de esplendor en torno al quality drama estadounidense. Unas narraciones que, en forma de alegoría, continúan (re)produciendo mayoritariamente espacios de vulnerabilidad en el que se refuerza la posición subsidiaria de las mujeres. Por ello, el presente texto se centra en el estudio de la reproducción de las lógicas de dominación patriarcales en tres grandes éxitos comerciales: Breaking Bad, Hijos de la Anarquía y The Walking Dead. Bajo el paraguas de la teoría crítica feminista, se realiza un análisis de la construcción de los principales personajes en torno a sus roles y espacios, prestando especial atención a la evolución de cada uno de ellos.

In the last two decades, superhero films have accounted for some of the most popular and financially lucrative films of all time. This thesis analyzes some of the aesthetic and ideological dimensions of various superhero films following their post 9/11 boom. Beginning with America’s response to the events of 9/11 and a subsequent retreat into a Manichean world of good versus evil, I introduce the term “empirical reality” in order to account for the ways daily American life is shielded from the worst effects of U.S. foreign policy. On screen this manifests by perpetuating the myth of the “clean war” through depictions of mass destruction without civilian casualties. Next, building on Achille Mbembe’s concept of “necropolitics,” I introduce the term “digital Others” to assess for the ways these films’ enemies are routinely digitized and dehumanized, rendered only to be killed. However, beyond the aesthetics of death, I investigate the narratives of post 9/11 superhero villains, often portrayed as aspiring conquerors bent on world domination. This imperial shadow, I argue, is simultaneously both a rejection and a projection of colonial guilt, with America imagining itself as the necropolitical target of its own policies. However, post 9/11 superhero films are also filled with ideological tensions. Occasionally, these films present critiques of institutions like the military industrial complex, but more often than not, such critiques often fall to the wayside by the end of the film. As a means to understand such contradictions, I turn to Mark Fisher’s concept of “capitalist realism” in order to trace how post 9/11 superhero films cannot imagine alternatives outside of empire and its capitalist hegemony. This thesis ends by examining two post 9/11 superhero films that come the closest towards refusing the status quo of empire.

Unlike past American wars, the current war on terror has not been associated with a centrally proffered narrative providing some guidance and orientation for those administering government services under state-of-war conditions. War is as much a cultural endeavor as it is a military undertaking, and the absence of a clear sensemaking narrative was detected in this study of public administrators from three agencies with varying proximity to the conflict. Q-methodology was used to explore the way individuals processed the war narratives put forth by the Bush administration and reported in the media immediately following the September 11 attacks. Though no distinct state-of-war narratives were found among the public administrators in this study, there are clear indications that latent narratives reflecting local political and organizational task environments have emerged.

While thousands of people directly experienced the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, millions of people were witnessed the attacks and their aftermath via the media, transforming the attacks into what researchers call a collective trauma. Then there is a different terrorism construction in the media after 9/11. Zizek's "looking awry" is the starting point of this research. Today, the media puts "the reality" in speech balloon and construe it with its own lenses. In this context, it is important to go beyond familiar discourse on the representations in the media. This research focuses on one of the most popular media tool's representation of the reality: Television. As Alhutsser argues that TV is an Ideological State Apparatuse which portrays the reality by images and myths. In this circle, this research examines the nuanced storytelling of the cable channel HBO's popular TV show; The Night Of (2016). Religious hatred has a major role in the show which reflects the show's post traumatic 9/11 main theme and the premise of the aftermath of the 9/11. Nine episodes long show portrays the individual thoughts and actions of the 9/11. In order to create the reality, the show casts a Muslim in the lead role and uses the "real" crimes at NYC which are happened after the 9/11: as the creator of the show addresses "cabbies are the victims of hate crimes." At the end, based on the image and context analysis of the show, it will become apparent that cinematic TV space becomes a political metaphor for the western cultural defense and uncomfortable social truths.

How can literature respond to a monumental event, unprecedented historically, politically and culturally, whose memory will forever be inseparable from its mass media coverage? How can writers represent what Jean Baudrillard called an "image-event"? In particular, what form can they use to convey the unspeakable - that was at the same time broadcast live across the globe? These questions are central to Ewa Kowal's comparative study of thirteen early post-9/11 novels. Written in four different Western countries between 2003 and 2007, during the now historical time of George W. Bush's "war on terror," the selected works provide the earliest literary reactions to the September 11,2001 terrorist attacks and/or their aftermath. Kowal examines them in a wider cultural context, focusing especially on audio-visual media, motifs of childhood and magical thinking as well as the destabilised division into reality and fiction. Offering an original reading of the whole body of work, the author places each analysed book on a scale according to its closeness to a terrorist attack, revealing a correspondence between the distance from the tragedy, the levels of danger and risk taken and the degree of formal (un)conventionality.

Las tesis de Ulrich Beck cobran más vida que nunca tras
los atentados del 11 de septiembre de 2011. Pues, tras ellos, se abre la
puerta a ese discurso que encumbra la Seguridad por encima de
Derechos y Libertades basándose en el riesgo. Una sociedad que teme
volver a ser atacada por un enemigo incierto dibujado a golpe de
estereotipos a través de alegatos políticos y de representaciones
mediáticas. En este segundo escenario es en el que se mueve la
presente investigación, que analiza cómo la ficción televisiva, en un
momento dulce en su Tercera Edad Dorada, refleja esta sensación de
miedo surgida tras los ataques. Para ello se hace uso de dos dramas de
la televisión por cable de EEUU con diferente apego a la realidad.
Por un lado, la vuelta a la paranoia terrorista de Homeland y, por
otro, el holocausto zombi desarrollado en The Walking Dead.

Los medios de comunicación actúan a la vez como espejo y reflejo a través de sus informaciones y ficciones. Un doble proceso en el que el cuarto poder muestra parcelas de la realidad a la par que difunde ciertas claves con las que interpretarla. Es por ello que el presente texto analiza las llaves que ayudan a la construcción de las relaciones de poder simbólicas a través del quality drama. Unas narraciones que viven un momento de esplendor y que están totalmente ligadas a las consecuencias del 11 de Septiembre: la obsesión por una Seguridad que también impacta en las relaciones sexo-género. Así, Susan Faludi (2009) denuncia como los media señalan la feminización del país como parte de las causas de la vulnerabilidad americana. De hecho, se proponen revivir la virilidad encarnada por los valores de aquellos vaqueros defensores de la familia y la patria frente a unas mujeres relegadas al hogar.
En este sentido, la presente investigación se centra en las series de televisión Breaking Bad (AMC, 2008-2013) e Hijos de la Anarquía (FX, 2008-2014), dos historias que narran la búsqueda de poder a través de una economía sumergida hundida en una espiral de violencia. Así, bajo el paraguas de la Economía Política Feminista y las herramientas del Análisis de Contenido, se analiza la representación de los hombres y las mujeres protagonistas de ambas series a través del reparto de los trabajos y roles, fundamento de una estructura dicotómica jerarquizada con base en las divisiones productivo/reproductivo y público/privado.

The mass media creates and promotes roles and stereotypes which help us to build our world. For this reason, it is considered to be on interest to analyze American television series, which are currently experiencing a new golden era, thanks to their commitment to quality and innovation. In this way this text seeks to understand gender roles in a world obsessed with the security, in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks, in order to find out if this productions are based on a binary system that places men as those in charge of security, production and the public space, while women are relegated to the private sphere. In conclusion, this research project focuses on the study of two quality dramas: Breaking Bad (AMC, 2008-2013) and Sons of Anarchy (FX, 2008-2014).
