Ding wins on debut

Teenager Ding Junhui justified all the hype surrounding his Wembley debut by making two century breaks on his way to a 6-3 win over Joe Perry.

The 16-year-old served notice of his intentions with a break of 58 in the first frame and 108 in the third to take a 3-1 lead at the interval.

Perry played well when he had the chance and did not lose heart when his Chinese opponent added a 118 break.

But a potted white by Perry let Ding back in and he cleared up to win.

I've got high hopes of success this season, but I put too much pressure on myself

Former world champion Peter Ebdon was sufficiently impressed watching at home to phone up and congratulate Ding on his display.

But after the match, the quietly spoken youngster refused to get carried away by his spectacular debut.

"I was confident before the match that I could win, but I felt nervous when I went up the stairs into the arena," he said through a translator.

"There's a lot of interest in this in China, it will be on television.

"I've got high hopes of success this season, but I put too much pressure on myself."

Ding is currently based in Northamptonshire during the season, and his next match at Wembley will be against world number five Stephen Lee on Tuesday evening.
